It is her aim for guests to experience the Philippines with their five senses and beyond. James Deakin on Fatherhood, Forgiveness, and Having No Time to Wait

James Deakin is a man who wears many hats. Who doesn’t recognize him? He’s a TV anchor, event host, motoring advocate, blogger, and social media personality. But with his multifaceted persona and the hectic schedule that he keeps, it’s his being family man, a loving husband and father to three kids, two boys and a girl, that he values the most. It is no wonder then that Technomarine chose to honor James, a truly exemplary dad, this Father’s Day.

“Time, it’s the most precious commodity,” Deakin relates when asked about the biggest challenge of being a father. “The harder you work, the more successful you become, the more time becomes precious. So it gets very hard to find that balance.”

His daily schedule can become as erratic as the next, starting as early as 5 am. As someone who doesn’t keep a regular office job, making time for his family is indeed a challenge, one that he doesn’t back down from. But there are compromises, he admits, especially since he has to work to earn a living for his wife and his growing brood.

“It’s very hard to manage the time, which is why I actually have someone else to do that for me,” Deakin says. “If you get too emotionally invested [in] your schedule, you tend to make the wrong decisions.”

Thus, James makes sure that his weekends are kept free and devoted solely to family time. He is grateful too that his wife Shelly is there to pick up the slack, to manage the day-to-day affairs of the household and take care of his kids while he is abroad. “She’s a wonderful mom and an extremely understanding wife.”

He also makes sure that they take off to the beach during the holiday season up until the New Year.  They have done so for the past 18 years, each time a priceless and memorable bonding experience.

Another memorable moment was being able to take his family abroad to Australia. “Going overseas with them was really nice,” Deakin says. “That’s the goal: to do family vacations overseas that’s not attached to work, like take 5 or 6 days off.  I really want to do a cruise.”

When asked about his parenting style, James is quick to admit that he’s hardly a strict father. “We give them a lot of leeway,” he says, “We don’t put a lot of pressure on them at all.” He would, therefore, like to be remembered as being a flexible, easygoing, and cool dad.

Still, he finds that being honest with his kids is very important, and he draws the line with alcohol and substance abuse. “We don’t sugarcoat. I want to equip them with the tools to make the proper decisions so they will know the consequences of their actions. “

And as for his advice to other dads, James turns sentimental.

“Don’t strive for perfection as we live in an imperfect world. Strive instead for honesty and love,” he says. “Be forgiving and teach them about forgiveness. Set an example.”

Retail Detail Expo hailed SM Supermalls as the winner in two categories – ‘Most Outstanding Feature or Prop’ and ‘Shopping Centres, Town Centres, and Airports’ – in The International VM Awards 2018 for SM Aura Premier’s A Christmas Under the Sea, at the recently concluded awarding ceremonies, held in Olympia, London; SM Supermalls assistant vice president for visual display Nats Suarez receiving the awards from Retail Design World editor Matthew Valentine.

SM Supermalls scored two awards in The International Visual Merchandising (VM) Awards by Retail Design Expo for SM Aura Premier’s A Christmas Under the Sea, winning in two categories – ‘Most Outstanding Feature or Prop’ and ‘Shopping Centres, Town Centres, and Airports’ – at the awarding ceremonies last May 3, in Olympia, London.

SM is the sole shopping mall brand to receive a VM Award, while completing the shortlist for the ‘Shopping Centres, Town Centres, and Airports’ category were SM South Luzon’s Dinos in the Mall and The Podium’s Wintery Christmas.

“These global accomplishments continue to drive our passion for innovation as we develop exciting and meaningful visual display exhibits and executions to elevate customer experiences in SM malls,” said Jonjon San Agustin, SM Supermalls senior vice president for marketing.

Retail Design Expo’s International VM Awards recognize the most outstanding visual merchandising executions and examples of point-of-purchase, window dressing, and displays across all seasons and sectors. On its second year, the Awards garnered over 140 entries worldwide.

In 2017, SM Supermalls won in the VM Christmas Awards for the 2016 SM Malls of Asia Christmas Wonderland mall display, under the ‘Shopping Centres, Town Centres and Airports’ category. COSPLAYER MOM’S WINNING EXTRATERRESTRIAL LOOK

Trisha Denise Montero, design graduate and young mother from Las Piñas City, won The Big Beauty Challenge Year 2 top prize with her whimsical rendition of the grand finals theme, Extraterrestrial.

Montero, who first won in the weekly Disney Princess-themed challenge, bested nine other aspiring makeup artists.  She took home P70,000 cash and P30,000 worth of Ever Bilena makeup products.

The cosplayer, who took a break when she became a mom, said, “I’m very grateful to have a family who supports my passions. Winning The Big Beauty Challenge will give me the opportunity to go back to cosplaying and support my family at the same time.”

Katherine Catiis won the special People’s Choice Award and P20,000 in cash. She had the most number of Facebook likes and shares. Hajie Alejandro received P30,000 as first runner-up while Zjhay TaupanP15,000 as second runner-up.

Competition judges were Ever Bilena executives, including key accounts manager Denise Sy-Muñez, marketing manager Olive Padilla and brand manager Christel Roca.

The contest, now on its second year, encouraged students, aspiring and professional makeup artists to create a tutorial on how to achieve a complete makeup look following a specific theme and using only Ever Bilena products.

Cole Sprouse in Manila

Cole Sprouse, star of Netflix’s hit coming-of-age drama-thriller “Riverdale,” arrived in Manila on April 18 for a fan meet-and-greet on April 20 at the SM Mega Fashion Hall and Glorietta Activity Center.

A Netflix representative told us that Sprouse’s visit to Manila has nothing to do with Netflix or “Riverdale” as he arrived here through Filipino apparel brand Bench, for which he is an endorser.

On April 19, Cole’s tweet that simply said “Manila Manila Manila!” garnered over 90,000 likes and 14,000 retweets.

Bench owner and founder Ben Chan also shared several photos of Cole upon the latter’s touchdown in Manila.

“It’s official – @colesprouse is here!” said one of Chan’s captions.

“Let’s give @colesprouse a warm welcome to Manila,” another caption read.

Cole is the twin brother of Dylan, and both first became known for respectively playing Cody and Zack in the Disney Channel series “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.” The twins’ characters in the series have also appeared other Disney Channel shows like Miley Cyrus’ “Hannah Montana.”

Cole, however, has appeared alone as Ross Geller’s son in the NBC TV sitcom “Friends” and as Billy in the Ashton Kutcher-starrer “That ‘70s Show.”

A graduate of Humanities specializing in Archeology at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study together with his brother, Cole worked briefly in archeological excavations and lab work.

Cole also took photography classes at the New York University and has been commissioned to shoot for Teen Vogue, The Sunday Times Style, and W Magazine, among others.

Since 2017, Cole has been starring as Jughead Jones in the CW TV series “Riverdale,” available in the Philippines through Netflix.

“Planning the shoot for James,” Martine begins, telling us about building the visuals of this campaign. “We thought about bringing back the spirit of our old campaigns way, way back to the beginning of the brand. We would shoot a lot of our images guerilla-style, with a really lean team. The charm of it was not knowing what you’ll get until you get there, capturing a lot of real moments along the way. For James, that’s basically what we did. For the visuals, we were inspired by the soft, sun-dappled lights and the eighties prep vibe from the film Call Me By Your Name – we booked a 12-hour mini vacation to a poolside villa outside of the city. A couple of books, some good food, music, it was a few fun hours spent with James and our photographer Cenon Norial III. Seeing the images now, we think we were able to capture a different side of James, a side that’s closer to something real.”
