The truth about fad diets

Most-Famous-Fad-Diets-of-All-Time-02-1440x810

“Fast and easy” diet programs are appealing to many people trying to lose weight. That’s because they want to be able to eat what they want and still lose weight. But are those methods safe, healthy and effective?

Here are some facts about fad diets to help people make informed decisions:

Fad diets may not be healthy. Fad diets may have short- and long-term effects on the body. In the short term, you may lose pounds but drastic weight loss without proper nutrition may have serious long-term effects on the body. When the body loses weight, the vital organs such as the liver and kidney will be overworked, as they try to get rid of excess fat and toxins from the body. It is important to support the body with proper nutrition. Proper monitoring of the body is needed when losing weight.

Fad diets are not based on nutrition. You are what you eat. Even if you are on a diet, your body needs the right nutrition to keep energy levels high and to avoid adverse health effects in the long run. To get all the essential nutrients, the diet should include balanced nutrition with different food groups, such as lean protein, vegetables and controlled fat and sources of sugar, like healthy carbohydrates and fruits.

Fad diets may lead to health problems. Losing weight may put some stress on vital organs. It is important that a person is healthy to go on a diet. It is always advisable to see a doctor before starting any weight-loss program and to be closely guided throughout the process.

Fad diets results are short-term. Most fad diets will help you lose weight for a short period of time, but you will eventually gain more than what you lost.  When the body does not get balanced nutrition, it will try to preserve itself by slowing down metabolism, making burning fat harder. While there may be weight loss initially, the body will eventually need more food to compensate for the loss, which can lead to more weight gain.

Fad diets may not help get rid of the fats. When weight and muscle are lost initially, you may be led to believe that a diet is effective. However, most weight loss resulting from fasting or starvation comes from burning vital muscles and not the loss of fat. When the body is starving, metabolism causes it to store energy, which it gets from body fat. But when there is little fat or muscle left, the body will start to metabolize the organs that are made of lean tissue. This may lead to stroke, heart attack or liver and kidney failure.

To lose weight, increase vegetable consumption, drink more water, eat lean protein, reduce fats and sugar consumption, including refined carbohydrates. Healthy habits like sleeping well and exercising will also aid healthy weight loss.

While you feel the need to lose weight, remember that your health matters more than the numbers on the weighing scale. Do your research before trying any fad diets.

Little Big Shots: TNT Boys ‘Somebody to Love’ Has Good Story Behind It

TNT-Boys-620x375

In the Season 3 episode of Little Big Shots, “Give Us S’mores,” host Steve Harvey meets the singing trio TNT Boys from the Philippines. They choose to sing the Queen song “Somebody to Love,” and they nail it. The soul-searching song, written by the late Queen lead singer and pianist Freddie Mercury, is about a man who questions his life without love and the role of God in his lonely life. The lyrics include: “Lord what you’re doing to me (yeah yeah)/ I have spent all my years in believing you/ But I just can’t get no relief, Lord!” When Queen recorded the song, the band layered their voices so it sounded like a giant gospel choir.

It’s well known that Mercury was heavily influenced by the Queen of Soul, Miss Aretha Franklin, while writing “Somebody to Love” in 1976. In the interview below, he says he would love to have Franklin sing “Somebody to Love” but it never happened. “I wish I could sing like her,” says Mercury. “When I sing, I think of her.” New episodes of Little Big Shots air Thursdays at 8pm on NBC.

Instagram and IGTV: What is it and how does the new video feature work?

IGTV-696x522 (1)Instagram has come a hell of a long way since it first launched eight years ago. From pictures in chronological order to people being distraught when videos were first added. While we still don’t have chronological order back, we have IGTV.

With Instagram TV (IGTV) having come online this month, we thought it would be worth explaining what the hell it is and what Instagram is trying to do with it.

igtv-instagram-1529926576

Instagram vs YouTube: What is IGTV?

IGTV is a new app for watching long-form, vertical video from your favourite Instagram creators. Whether it’s DIY or a comedy skit, creators now can make videos up to an hour long.

Ok, so it’s a new app but still part of Instagram?

While there’s a stand-alone IGTV app, you’ll also be able to watch from within the Instagram app. With over 1 billion people now using Instagram, Facebook, who owns the platform, seems to be pushing all of its focus in that direction.

IGTV is described as “different in a few ways”. First, it’s built for how you actually use your phone, so videos are full screen and vertical.

With vertical video seen as the future of video and content creation, the company seems to believe it has got it down to a tee.

“We’ve made it simple, too. Just like turning on the TV, IGTV starts playing as soon as you open the app. You don’t have to search to start watching content from people you already follow on Instagram and others you might like based on your interests. You can swipe up to discover more — switch between “For You,” “Following,” “Popular” and “Continue Watching.” You can also like, comment and send videos to friends in Direct.”

Similarly to TV, IGTV has channels. The difference? The content creators are the channels. As soon as you follow someone on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up with their videos.

Is IGTV only for professional creators?

No, if you want to upload one hour of you singing to the camera, you can do so. Anyone can upload to IGTV via the app or even start their own channel on the web. Always wanted to be a daily vlogger but could never afford a camera? Cameras are useless on this platform, it’s all about your phone.

How to get IGTV?

Whether you’re on Android or iOS, you may have noticed that you have IGTV already. If your Instagram app has updated recently, you should see an IGTV button in the top right of your screen.

If you want to keep things separate, you can head over to the Google Play Store or App Store to download the IGTV app itself.

Will YouTube fight back?

With Facebook no longer that popular among young people, the push to brand more content with adds has played a big part in IGTV. With YouTube, people get paid some of the ad revenue for their videos, IGTV intends to follow the same method.

The longer a video is, Instagram will put a few second ad video in between. The promise of extra revenue has also appealed to creators who will now be more drawn to Instagram.

FIBA WORLD CUP ASIAN QUALIFIERS: How to go to Philippine Arena for Gilas-Australia

Gilas Pilipinas will host the Boomers at the Philippine Arena in a highly-anticipated FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifers rematch.

 1530069418_1482674305-unnamed-6

The Philippine Arena is a sight to behold, truly a world-class facility.

That’s why when Gilas Pilipinas hosts the Boomers of Australia for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asia Qualifiers on Monday, July 2, it will be at the massive 55,000-seat arena.

There are a lot of good things to say about the Philippine Arena, however, it’s also a little bit out of way for the regular Pinoy.

But never fear, as per usual, free shuttle services will be provided Monday for the highly-anticipated Gilas-Boomers rematch in the Asian Qualifiers.

For the 7:30 p.m. match, just show up at Trinoma for the free shuttle services. The first batch leaves for Bulacan at 3:00 p.m. while the second batch will depart two hours later at 5:00 p.m.

That’s pretty much free.

What’s not free are the tickets for the Philippines-Australia game.

The most expensive ones available are the Patron A seats which go for P1,550 and the cheapest ones are the Lower Box, which go for P170 each and are free seating.

DgoG79kW4AInGOY

Before the Gilas-Austalia match though, the Philippines will have to deal with its rematch with Taipei first.

That will be in Taipei on Friday, June 29, and tip off is set at 7:00 p.m.
