Discovery Perlas Pilipinas wins in Japan tourney anew

TDLCI_Discovery Perlas Pilipinas wins in Japan tourney anew_Photo

Former women’s national basketball team Discovery Perlas Pilipinas topped for the second year in a row in the recent Memorial Day Tournament at the Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan.

Cheering the team on its way to a back-to-back victory was Cynthia Tiu, team manager and acknowledged mother of Philippine women’s Basketball. A member of the family behind the Discovery group of hotels and resorts, Tiu has made it her personal mission to provide full and unwavering support to Discovery Perlas Pilipinas. She has been an advocate for women’s basketball since 2008. That year, for the first time in Philippine history, the national team won the gold in the SEABA Tournament and two silver medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The Discovery Perlas consists of 12 members, each a bemedalled baller from top educational institutions: Ish Tiu, SEA Games silver medalist, from Ateneo de Manila University; Ella Rodriguez, from Los Angeles, California and a player from Enderun Colleges; Joylyn Pangilinan, a member of the Guam National Team who is also from Enderun Colleges; Karla Manuel, Carolina Sanggalang, Sai Larosa and SEA Games silver medalist Joy Galicia, all from the University of Santo Tomas; Ford Grajales, SEA Games silver medalist, from Lyceum of the Philippines University; Lhen Flormata, SEA Games silver Medalist, also from Lyceum; Rica Francisco, from Rizal Technological University; Angeli Gloriani, SEA Games silver medalist, from De La Salle University; and Banjo Soriano, a member of University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion team from Far Eastern University.

Rodriguez, 25 and 5”11, received the Most Valuable Player Award while Pangilinan, 19, a Filipino-American from Guam, was chosen as a member of the “Mythical Five” of NAASCU (National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities).

Haydee Ong, the team’s head coach, says victory did not come easy. “It takes a lot of sacrifice to prepare a team for an international competition. First of all, you have to deal with the different players’ various other commitments. Some of our players are already working and some are playing for different universities,” she says.

Assistant Coach Sen Dysangco credited Tiu and the Discovery group for their patronage that helped Discovery Perlas achieve so much. “Through thick and thin, win or lose, she (Tiu) has always tried to generate grassroots support for women’s basketball,” says Dysangco. Private sector support, he says, is much needed as government funding is not enough to cover the team’s expenses.

Where to go if you are a vegetarian

Are you a vegetarian? Do you find dining out a challenge for the very limited selections?
There are actually many restaurants where any vegetarian can have a hearty meal. You just have to know where to look. Here are some options:

Todd English - Caesar Salad

Salads

For something delicious, healthy and affordable, try Harvesters Vegetarian. It serves some of the best “beef” and “meat” dishes, like beef broccoli, barbecue, and sweet and sour pork. They are so good, it is hard to believe they’re made of tofu. Visit its branches at SM Cubao, SM North Edsa, SM Megamall, SM South Mall, SM Manila and SM Makati.

SaladStop! is known for its wide range of combinations of salads and soups, the best seller, Oh Crab Lah!, is loved for its Singaporean Chili Crab dressing that consists of romaine, crab sticks, tomato, vermicelli, egg, red onion and croutons. Grab a healthy bite today at its branches in SM Megamall and SM Mall of Asia.

The Corner Market, The Podium’s new food hall, is adding a new twist to the Manila food scene with the first indoor farmers market. Among the 17 food stalls, you can find Gusto!, an organic salad bar that serves produce from local farmers. Visit The Corner Market at 2/F The Podium in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City.

The Food Hall by Todd English, the first restaurant by a celebrity chef in Manila, opened in 2014 at SM Aura Premier. It set the trend in the food hall concept in Asia. Choose from fresh salads, freshly baked flatbread, signature pastas and many more.

Ten Ren - Orange Green Tea

Refreshments and desserts

Originally from Taiwan, TenRen’s Tea is among the best milk tea shops in the world. It has been satisfying customers in the Philippines since 2016. As a leading international retailer and manufacturer of specialty teas, it offers a number of specialty tea-based beverages! The teas are made-to-order and use only natural ingredients and whole leaf teas.  Popular flavors include the 913 King’s Oolong Tea, Orange Green Tea, Taro Green Milk Tea, and Green Tea Mango Slush. Have a cool afternoon at the SM Mall of Asia Complex.

Another popular spot is BLK 513’s frozen yogurt. What makes it different from the rest is the black color, which comes from activated charcoal that helps absorb harmful chemicals in the body. Add in strawberry, kiwi, mango, lychee and more for extra flavor. Visit BLK 513 at SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia Complex and SM North Edsa.

There are no guilty pleasures in these vegetarian-friendly places, just amazing dishes. Head to the nearest SM mall to enjoy veggies like never before. For more information, visit www.smsupermalls.com and its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts: @smsupermalls.

Design and creative managers in the Philippines now have a greater opportunity to harness their talents and improve their entrepreneurial skills with the launch of Creative Innovators Programme. Also made possible through a partnership with the Philippine Trade and Training Center (PTTC), Apl.de.Ap Foundation and Thames International, the Creative Innovators Programme will include mentorships, management trainings, grants, and networking opportunities, not just in the Philippines, but across ASEAN and the UK.

“Through the Creative Innovators Programme, we will be able to push, strengthen, develop and improve the creative industry in the country,” said Rhea Matute, executive director of the Design Center of the Philippines. “It is our aim to provide a venue for Filipino designers to grow not just their creative talents but also their business skills, to be able to contribute to the country’s economy, develop a thriving design ecosystem and a creative powerhouse in the global arena.”

Leading the launch was Nicholas Thomas, country director for the British Council in the Philippines who remarked that creative industries are the heart of the modern economy and that Filipinos, being creative in nature, have shown great potential in succeeding in this field.

Also gracing the event were Nestor Palabyab, executive director for the Philippine Trade Training Center; Apl de Ap, founder of the Apl.de.Ap Foundation; Malaya del Rosario, head of arts and creative industries for the British Council; and Joel Santos, President of Thames International and trustee of the Apl.de.Ap Foundation.
